Blue Flame Agave

Agave 'Blue Flame' - Blue Flame Agave

Description

Agave 'Blue Flame' is a clump forming Agave with beautiful blue foliage, individual rosettes can grow 2-3' tall with an equal spread with clumps getting 5' tall or more. The rosettes formed resemble a flame, hence the cultivar name. Blue Flame Agave has very fine teeth along the margins as well as a terminal spine. This variety is the result of a cross between Agave shawii x Agave attenuata was created by Dave Verity in the early 1960's at UCLA's Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden. The A. shawii give 'Blue Flame' some of it's cold hardiness while the A. attenuata give the foliage near spineless margins. This Agave will flower in time, producing a very unusual arching spike due to the cross made to create 'Blue Flame'
