Flirt™ Spring Color
|
Description
Nandina domestica `MURASAKI` is a new Nandina discovered by 2 employees at the Magnolia Gardens Nursery tissue culture facility. This new Nandina is a sport of Nandina domestica ‘Harbour Dwarf’ but unlike it's Mom Flirt has wine red colored young foliage that is retained while the plant is actively growing. Mature foliage is deep blue green in color. The cultivar name 'MURASAKI' means purple in Japanese and was given as the name because of the color of the new growth. Like 'Harbour Dwarf', Flirt stays small at 12-24" tall with a 14-20" spread and is characterized by its tight, dense mounding plant habit, spreading slowly through underground rhizomes with age. Spikes of white flowers are seen in the spring, no berries have been observed to date in Magnolia, TX, most likely due to the intense summer heat.
