Strelitzia reginae - Orange Bird of Paradise

Description

Strelitzia reginae is indigenous to South Africa. This large, evergreen, clumping perennial has 20" oblong-lanced leaves atop 3' stalks. Orange Bird of Paradise has brilliant orange and blue flowers that come out of a hard beak-like sheath. This gives the appearance of a bird's head, hence the common name. Birds and other wildlife perch on the spathe to drink nectar. This is a great choice for cut flowers.
